At Birches Green we use Charanga to support our music teaching, this is an online music scheme with lots of visual aids and interactive resources to support your children's learning about music. Our children love using our sets of glockenspiels, percussion trolleys and recorders to take part practically in classroom music lessons.

Children have the opportunity to learn instruments as part of their school provision; this is a fantastic opportunity for furthering their musical knowledge and understanding.

All children also take part in a singing assembly once a fortnight where they learn songs related to the season or important festivals. The children have even been learning to sing in harmony! At Christmas we invite parents to join us for a Christmas sing-a-long at St Barnabas Church to share the songs we have been learning.

Curriculum Statement

Each year group has a 30-minute music lesson each week. The Charanga music scheme is used following the year group model but can be adapted to suit the current curriculum themes. Whole-school singing practice takes place each week for 30 minutes. Through the Birmingham Services for Education children have the opportunity to learn brass and woodwind instruments. During the Autumn 2 term, the school work together to develop a Christmas themed performance.

Our curriculum is in line with the national curriculum for music. We strive to ensure all pupils have the opportunity to:

  • Listen to and evaluate a variety of music from a range of styles, musicians and composers
  • Identify music genres
  • Create and compose music with instruments and with the use of technology
  • Sing and play instruments with increasing confidence and control
  • Use and understand staff and other musical notation
